UCMAS Mental Math, the provider of the leading North American educational program in Abacus and Mental Math for children, held its 14th National UCMAS Abacus and Mental Math Competition on June 4th 2019 at the Paramount Fine Food Center, Mississauga, Ontario.
The UCMAS competition, the largest of its kind in North America, featured 4,500 UCMAS Mental Math students from across Canada. One-hundred to two-hundred math questions in eight minutes tested the epitome of speed and accuracy in arithmetic for math wizard as young as 4 years. UCMAS students aged 4-13 armed with their abacus and mental math skills donning their green t-shirts at Hershey center’s skating ring that was converted to an exam hall specifically designed for the competition, performed calculation faster than a calculator. This year was special as parents were first time able to see the competition live at the grand venue. The competitive spirit of UCMAS students demonstrated their mastery not only in mental math, but also in problem-solving, memory and focus.
Students participated in two categories – Visual and Listening. In visual category, students leaned forward in their seats in deep concentration, using their physical or virtual abacus in mind solved question after question. They used their speed writing skills to jolt down solution on paper. In listening category, the moderator gave them verbal arithmetic problems that they had to solve, jot down their answer on small placards before displaying the placards up with their solutions. After a series of elimination rounds, the champions of the different listening competition levels emerged victorious.
On the successful completion of the event, Megha Karia, CEO of UCMAS Canada, said, “The competition is an integral part of our culture. It was delightful to see so many young children with so much potential to come together, along with their parents and make this a great community gathering. We’re elated and would also like to thank all the parents who traveled from several far-away cities of the country.”
Top achievers from the competition were announced at an Awards Ceremony with awards presented to the champions and finalists in front of an audience of 5000 parents, friends and dignitaries. The trophy winners of the competition will be invited to represent Canada at the International UCMAS Competition held in Bali Indonesia, December 2017.
“We are pleased by the dedication and accomplishments of all our UCMAS Bolton students, who made us proud with improved performance from last year” said Jalpa Patel, Centre Director of the UCMAS Bolton Centre. “Our students take pride in participating in the competition as it is an opportunity to demonstrate their extraordinary confidence with numbers and their mental sharpness.”
